Berkeley Homes’ Appeal: Urgent Call to Action

Berkeley Homes has appealed the Council’s rejection of their planning application to build 350 houses between Evendons Lane and Barkham Road. This is our final opportunity to object to this unwanted development that threatens our community and environment.

Please take a moment to read why Wokingham Borough Council rejected this application and why we are against it.

Key Objections

Natural Environment Impact

The proposed development poses severe threats to our local ecosystem:• Destruction of a Local Wildlife Site within pristine ancient woodland
• Felling of at least 167 mature trees across the site
• Disruption of habitats for protected species including bats, badgers, and birds
• Uprooting of ancient hedgerows and building over fields, destroying vital habitats and foraging grounds

Loss of Rural Character

The development would irreversibly alter our community’s landscape:• Permanent loss of green space between Wokingham and Barkham
• Transformation of open countryside views into a suburban landscape
• Destruction of Blagrove Lane, one of Wokingham’s last ancient rural lanes, due to increased traffic
• Disruption of wildlife corridors, impacting animals that currently access Viking Field

Preservation of Settlement Gap

The proposed site is crucial for maintaining the distinct characters of Barkham and Wokingham:• Land never designated for housing development
• Not included in the council’s new Local Plan Update
• Currently serves as good agricultural land and native woodland

Road Safety Concerns

The development poses significant risks to road safety:• Closure of Blagrove Lane to northbound traffic, redirecting all new estate traffic southbound
• Proposed widened road junction outside Evendons School, increasing danger for schoolchildren
• New major junction on Barkham Road near a dangerous bend and hill brow
